Re: community men's sheds I agree with all you are saying FKiwi. Women's DIY is a great idea, means us guys can get on with the stuff that REALLY interests us. Actually I'd just like a shed that doesn't leak, since I gave over that basement to office space, all my gear is in a slightly damp.
SolmackerOh, we put up a Men's Sheds website. http://menshseds.org.nz. Tell us your Men's shed news.. |

Re: community men's sheds Absolutely!,
I'd be into this concept and are based in Ashburton. This is an ideal platform to give men what the media ignores, some real skills, self-esteem and a bit of respect as well. I'd have no compunction at setting a thing like this up in AshVegas, all I need is an area to do it in. I am a registered electrician and it pains me to hear (via the media) that some men are "useless" with basic hand tools, like hammers, saws, spanners (not the knuckle-skinning crescents) and other such stuff. Now, some DIY stores these days have DIY evenings for women, that in all honesty excludes MEN. The Community Men's Sheds idea is something I want to be a part of this movement, as I have always stood up for mens rights. If someone can post here or flick me an e-mail from my profile, I'll get back to you. Mike. |

Re: community men's sheds The Canterbury Men's Centre are assisting the development of a number of Canterbury men's sheds at 'Hub' meetings. We would love to hear your experiences so we can learn how you are going with it.

Re: community men's sheds Further to Neil's comments, the West Frankin Community Mens Shed has a fully equipped joinery workshop in the Waiuku area. Any local handyman who requires the occasional use of *BIG* machinery is welcome to sign on. Art

community men's sheds Hi Olwyn - seems to be that women are often better at organising networks than men - so great to see your skills and talents at getting this practical site up and running for adults. Currently am promoting the concept of Community Men's Sheds in local areas - where men can pool their resources, give encouragement to each other, make things, share things, make friends if lonely, be positive role models for young ones and pass on the skills of different trades etc etc. If there are such people keen to get involved in their district I can suggest contacts in several areas. Presently there are Community Men's Sheds in Waiuku, Thames, Hamilton and Dunedin with others in the wings Newtown, Wairarapa, Picton. While the title suggests a focus on men, that is because men have fewer opportunities and networks available to them than women do and men are a little less onto matters of personal health. There is no sense of being exclusive but rather being able to give support to a group who often have different interests, like to do things differently and can become separated from the mainstream by partner loss, retirement, redundancy, ailing health and circumstance.
Cheers
